AREAS OF STUDY

This Workshop is designed to give participants hands-on experience in Baroque technique and interpretation through masterclasses and coached ensemble sessions with internationally acclaimed faculty.  We welcome players of all levels in this five-day Baroque immersion course.  Pitch will be at both 415 and 440.  Solo practice time will be available for all participants.

harpsichord

Students will be expected to come with at least two solo pieces - one by J.S. Bach and another of their own choosing. Spanish music is suggested, such as by Scarlatti, Soler, or a contemporary, in keeping with the opera's Spanish theme this year. Continuo will move at the level of the participants, concentrating on accents; rhythmic as well as harmonic.

Individual instruction for all levels. Solo, consort, and duo repertoire. Individual coaching on bass lines and obligato parts. Intro to viol for string players. Different aspects of right- and left-handed technique to be covered each day.

SPECIAL PROJECT

“LOS ELEMENTOS”
by Antonio Literes (1673-1747)

In addition to our normal masterclasses and ensembles in the workshop, we are featuring a special project - a performance of the opera  Los Elementos, written by Antonio Literes in 1705. This is a delightful work for 6 singers (Earth, Air, Fire, Water, Dawn and Time) and a small Baroque orchestra, and so can employ many of the participants enrolled in the course. Our adapted version of this tuneful and powerful work will fit the needs of the workshop and be an exciting addition to our offerings this year.
